Clarksons of Petergate

Clarksons of Petergate is a celebrated menswear store located in the historic city of York. Situated on one of the city's oldest streets, the building dates back to the 1500s and retains many of its original features, including its very own resident ghost!

Founded by Ken Clarkson, who returned from his service with the Royal Ordnance Corps in Kenya, Clarksons of Petergate quickly established itself as a cornerstone of York’s menswear scene. Alongside his former Andersons colleague, George Brown, Ken opened a tailoring business on Low Petergate. The business’s big break came when a Van Heusen representative convinced Ken to stock twelve shirts on a sale or return basis. After selling out within a week, Clarksons of Petergate York began its gradual expansion, focusing on high-quality shirts.

Following Ken’s passing in the late 1970s, the business was taken over by John Barker, who refined the store’s identity as a leading shirt retailer, earning it the title of "The Shirt Store" of York. In 1991, after John retired, Mel, Zoe, and Andrew Hannan took over, ensuring the continued success of Clarksons of Petergate.

In 2012, the store expanded further, moving into 31 Petergate and doubling its space to include a focus on tweeds. This growth continued in 2015 with the opening of the "Tweed Room" and exclusive collaborations with local supplier Abraham Moons. In 2019, Clarksons of Petergate York expanded yet again, opening a second store on Blake Street to showcase an even wider selection of tweeds.

Today, Clarksons of Petergate continues to thrive under the leadership of Andrew and Zoe, remaining a trusted name in menswear and proudly serving the people of York and beyond. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the business remains open and vibrant, with all three locations operating strong.
